BACKGROUND
How prepared are you to handle a mental health or emotional crisis that may impact a team member at work?
Providing psychological first aid can put employees in a very uncomfortable situation, especially if they have not had adequate training. Developing a few practical skills to help people in distress can make all the difference. The main priorities are to support the person impacted by the crisis and minimise the risks for everyone involved and the organisation.
objective
Presented by a qualified Mental Health First Aider, this training develops some critical skills for people leaders, and has particular relevance for HR practitioners and Health, Safety & Wellbeing staff. It deals with managing mental health crises and extreme emotional responses in a work setting.
Through an online introductory module and follow-up workshop, participants will learn about the effective and appropriate responses to some typical crisis situations, from panic attacks through to experiences of trauma and grief. Using a role-play exercise, participants will practise out a simple 4-step model for responding to crisis situations and explore some best-practice methods to manage those in distress until help arrives in the form of an ambulance, the CAT (crisis assessment team) or a family member. They will also learn some tips for keeping the team safe when an incident occurs, as well as for looking after their own wellbeing.
Available formats
