BACKGROUND

When we face times of great uncertainty, as individuals, teams and organisations, we are increasingly susceptible to mental ill-health, as well as less likely to prioritise suitable mental healthcare and support.

COVID-19 presents as one of the greatest moments of global uncertainty in recent history. Being well-equipped to provide informed, flexible and evidence-based support is crucial for responding effectively to the current challenges while promoting mental and overall health and wellbeing.

OBJECTIVE

Supported by follow-up online group coaching, this blended online or face-to-face workshop series explores how times of great uncertainty impact individuals and organisations, highlighting which aspects of mental and behavioural health are most likely to be affected.

It takes a practical and proactive approach to help individuals adapt, build resilience and maintain their mental health with flexible thinking and emotional regulation. It also outlines how to help limit anxiety contagion, which is a significant threat during times of uncertainty. COVID-19 presents a threat to mental and physical health, and effectively balancing the response to these challenges is another important focus of this seminar series.

learning outcomes

Participants can expect to gain a more confident ability to:

  • identify some key facts and considerations concerning COVID-19 from a local and global perspective

  • identify the specific challenges faced by individuals, teams and organisations during times of great uncertainty, and specifically by COVID-19

  • recognise the various ways individuals experience and react to times of great uncertainty, including health anxiety, how it develops, and what sustains it within individuals and organisations

  • identify and explore significant stressors and those specific to COVID-19 like the potential and sometimes looming need to work from home at short notice

  • apply some strategies to promote psychological flexibility in response to uncertainty and anxiety, including emotional acceptance (in relation to ‘locus of control’) and mindfulness

  • establish some healthy behaviours that are backed by evidence to improve mental, physical and overall health and wellbeing, while maintaining specific considerations for limiting the spread of infection

  • apply some strategies to maintain a positive work culture during uncertainty, including reconnecting to personal and organisational values (placing wellbeing at the heart of these), promoting cultural awareness and sensitivity during global challenges, especially those related to COVID-19, and maintaining meaningful connections where there is a disparate workforce.
