BACKGROUND

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) provides participants with the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their co-workers and help guide them to professional help if needed. Research demonstrates that MHFA courses increase knowledge, confidence and helpful behaviours, and assist in reducing stigma.

The MHFA course is based on evidence of what is best-practice mental health first aid to support someone who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing the worsening of a problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence base has been developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne, through developing expert consensus guidelines for providing mental health first aid to address a number of different mental health problems and crises in different contexts.

The course teaches people how to provide initial support to other adults who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
